The bicycle patrol unit was established as a means of furthering the department’s commitment to community policing. The assignment of patrol bureau personnel to uniformed bicycle patrol activities is intended to provide a contemporary alternative to standard patrol tactics. The assignment provides officers with a unique opportunity to reach areas and locations not generally accessible to motorized patrol. It also enhances the officers’ability to interact with the public on a more personal level. Bicycle patrol officers are required to undergo specialized training and wear a uniform modified for bicycle patrol activities.
